Kuol Deng Kuol (also known as Kuol Adol) was Paramount Chief of the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms of Abyei. He was killed in May 2013 when a UNISFA convoy he was traveling in was ambushed by Misseriya militia.

Deng Majok ruled from 1945 to 1969. He is widely credited with maintaining peace with neighboring Arab communities through sustained diplomacy, and was the father of scholar and diplomat Dr. Francis Mading Deng.

    Deng Majok becomes Paramount Chief

    Deng Majok succeeded his father, Kuol Arop, as Paramount Chief of the Ngok Dinka, beginning a reign marked by diplomacy with neighboring Misseriya leadership and remembered as a period of relative peace.

    Kuol Deng Kuol becomes Paramount Chief

    Following the death of Paramount Chief Deng Majok in 1969, leadership of the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms passed to Kuol Deng Kuol (Kuol Adol).

  3. Historical Event

    Assassination of Paramount Chief Kuol Deng Kuol

    Paramount Chief Kuol Deng Kuol was killed on 4 May 2013 when his UNISFA-escorted convoy was ambushed by Misseriya gunmen near Difra (Kej), following a meeting of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee. His death was condemned by the African Union, the United Nations, and international human rights organizations, and remains a defining moment in the recent history of the Ngok Dinka traditional leadership.

    Bulabek Deng Kuol elected Paramount Chief

    Shortly after the assassination of Kuol Deng Kuol, the Ngok Dinka community elected Bulabek Deng Kuol, a son of Kuol Arop from the Abior chiefdom, as the new Paramount Chief of the nine chiefdoms.

    All nine chiefdoms of the Ngok Dinka in Abyei organized a joint cultural revival event aimed at passing traditional customs, dance styles, and values on to younger generations, described by Paramount Chief Bulabek Deng Kuol as a response to a widening generational gap caused by decades of conflict and displacement.
